Reasoning Away God's Best~

Stopping at a red light, I saw a sign that grabbed my attention.
What's it going to be? Reasons or results?

As the light turned green and I started down the street, my mind stayed motionless, stuck on this thought.

Reasons or results......

Hmmmm? How many times have I settled for reasons and foregone the results I truly desire?

Lose weight?
No, I reason it out in my mind, I just don't have the money to join a gym. Plus, how would I fit this into my already busy schedule? It would just be another thing to add to my never ending to-do-list.

Clean out the garage?
No, I reason again, where would I even start? There is just too much stuff in there. Besides, before I even have time to enjoy a clutter-free garage, stuff will simply start piling up in there again.

Go to Italy?
Are you kidding me? Why there are a million and one reasons why I will never get to Venice!

As you have probably noticed, I am the queen of reasoning. Give me a goal, a dream, a new idea and I can instantly come up with a zillion reasons why it won't work, it's down right impossible, or I just can't "fit it" into my life.

Needless to say, I am still carrying around a few extra pounds. My car is parked in the driveway. And Venice....well, it's still in Italy and I'm still here.

Reasons.  A tons of reasons, but not too many results.

Excuses.  One after another, but not many changes.

Nicodemus knew all about reasoning, too. After all, he was a Pharisee. (Need I say more?) As we pick up his story in John 3, we discover this learned man almost reasoned himself right out of the kingdom of God.
There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

“What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

“How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked.

Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things? "
~ John 3:1-10
When it comes to losing weight, de-cluttering my garage or making plans to visit Italy, I simply need to "do it".  Just do it. PERIOD.

When it comes to taking God at His word, trusting in Him and stepping out into the born-again life He is calling me to,  I simply need to trust God. Just trust God. PERIOD.

What about you?

Have you been reasoning yourself out of God's best for you, too?

Do you have health goals that have yet to be reached?
Are there projects in your garage or tucked into your heart that are still waiting to be tackled?
Is Venice calling your name, too?

Then stop reasoning.  Stop making excuses.  Just do it. PERIOD.

Like Nicodemus, have you sought out God for direction only to reason away the call of God on your life?

Then, stop reasoning it away.  Stop making excuses. Accept His invitation, take hold of His hand and step out in the new life God is calling you to.  Just trust God. PERIOD.

We may not always understand the how, the why, the when, the where or the what of God's plan, but that's ok.  All we need to know is WHO - our God.

Well....what's it going to be?

Reasons or results?

Excuses or change?

Man's thoughts or God's ways?

The choice is up to us~

  1. Does this mean we are finally going to Italy?? :) This was perfect timing for me...seriously, like in the very moment I needed it...Thank you, friend. xoxo

  2. Well, Stacy, if this is an open invitation to Italy . . . just kidding! Seriously, you've made me look at all the reasons and excuses I've given for so many things in my life. I think it's time to consider being result-oriented, especially after the refresher course on Nicodemus. You are a gifted and talented, not to mention faithful daughter of our Christ. I thank him for you daily.

  3. Hi Stacy - such a great post and great reminder that God is the God of the impossible and that there is no reasoning with that :)
    God bless
