Hooked ~ Day 5 (31 Days of Wisdom)

We stand on the small bank at the edge of the river.

I watch as my husband rummages through his tackle box in search of the perfect "fly" to attach to his line.

He looks at the water once again.

"This ought to do the trick," he says.

Then, with confidence exuding through a smile slowly appearing on his face, he ties on the insect-decoy and casts his line.

It only takes a moment.

A hit

A jerk.

A fish, caught  - - -
              lured in by his appetite.

Appetites.

We all have them.

The desire to have,

a need to fill,

a craving to satisfy.

But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire (lust, passions). ~ James 1:14, Amplified

And while appetite in of itself is not sinful, the choices we make in our pursuit to satisfy our appetites often are.

Gluttony

Greed

Adultery

Then the evil desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully matured, brings forth death. ~ James 1:15, Amplified

Proverbs 5 warns of the dangers that are sure to come when we give into the seducing voices of our fleshly desires, especially the voice of someone other than our husband or our wife.

It only takes a moment.

A look.

A smile.

A unsuspecting soul, caught, lured in by his or her appetite.

An evil man is held captive by his own sins;
they are ropes that catch and hold him.
He will die for lack of self-control;
he will be lost because of his great foolishness.
~ Proverbs 5:22-23, NLT

Satan, like a fisher, baits his hook according to the appetite of the fish.
~Thomas Adams

"This ought to do the trick," Satan says.

And, if we aren't careful,

if we do not listen to Wisdom,

if we do not turn and run,

if we do not choose the way of escape that God promises to make for us, (1 Cor 10:13)

WE. WILL. GET. CAUGHT.

The choice is up to us.

  1. Stacy - this is so true and Satan knows exactly what bait to use.

There are so many marriages suffering today (many within the churches). Satan sure has his hooks in deep.

I've been enjoying your Proverbs posts (although I haven't had time to come each day and leave a comment). Thanks for linking up at the Grace Cafe.

    Blessings
